It’s like this, a 5-year-old child screaming in the middle of a supermarket doesn’t get rewarded with a toy.
Similarly, digital marketing agencies spewing out post after post of generic content won’t get rewarded with my time. And here’s why you shouldn’t reward them with yours either.
It’s almost always dull! There are so many boring blog posts claiming what X can teach us or how you can do Y. And the worst thing about them… they are all the same! They use exactly the same common-sense bullet points, they just come packaged with different colour bows.
My advice, try creating something unique. If all you can do is copy someone else, perhaps you shouldn’t be an agency, blogger or self-proclaimed digital guru.
The last few years have seen a boom in a sin bigger than generic content.
Click-bait, click-bait, click-bait! What a load of bullsh**t! Content created with deliberately misleading titles designed to make us click. Of course the page owner can proclaim to have more “interactive” users with every click and thus earn more from display ads.
Which brings me nicely onto display ads… I have never once opened a blog article and thought, actually now I can see that disgusting flashing banner I do want to buy your portable walrus cleaning kit. Quite frankly, these ads suck. With average click-through rates of 0.06% why do we even bother.
If that wasn’t enough, consider how digital marketing blogs have become data capturing whores.
When was the last time you read a post that didn’t shout at you for your email address? Sometimes you’ll see that data capture bar hidden in the text or cowering in the sidebar, maybe it’s a pop-up proclaiming to give you “free access” in return for your email address. But by far the worst, straight out of the Hitler School of Digital Marketing, are those horrible lightboxes that appear when you try to leave a page you’ve probably been conned into viewing in the first place.
So that’s why I think all digital marketing blogs are bullshit… yep, even this one!
